Tonight’s dinner was at The Progress. We’ve eaten here with Trisha A. pre-pandemic (funny how we divide so many things into before covid, during, and after). I honestly don’t remember what we ate last time, but I do remember exactly where we sat and being with Trisha, but I don’t recall the food. It is still a Michelin-starred restaurant along with the other Michelin-starred sister restaurant next door, State Bird Provisions. We’ve also greatly enjoyed the other restaurant from the group, Anchovy Bar, around the corner.
Cocktails to start (not pictured were colorful (aside from the martini) and tasty. Andrea had We Got the Beet (beet infused tequila drink) and I had The Sirens of Titan. There was another cocktail, One Punch Man, that I was laughing at the name being a fan of the anime. First 4 dishes we had were all vegetarian (but not necessarily vegan). The deconstructed caesar salad was great with fresh greens, dressing and toppings. The masa dumplings were very also very good (we’ve become big fans of masa). Next came the porcini toasts and harissa cauliflower. Both very tasting.
For the main course, we went with a new goat-based dish. The goat was served 4-ways – roasted loin, slow roasted, a broth, and some goat cheese. It was a very fun and flavorful dish and we really enjoyed it. The goat wasn’t gamy at all and perhaps one of the best goat dishes we’d ever had (granted, we haven’t had many outside of mexican or indian food).
We decided to try a couple desserts, one was the black sesame wheat donuts and the other was a poppyseed-medjool date roll cake with chocolate plum sauce. We enjoyed the donuts because the wheat had a little more flavor then in regular white flour donuts, the huckleberries gave a nice fruit flavor, the honey-thyme ice creams some creamy , and the candied quinoa a little texture. The date roll cake was meh – primary flavor came from the chocolate sauce (the buddhas hand gave a nice fruity kick though) and the cake was not very flavorful and texture was primarily like a sponge cake.
Wines by the glass were decent, although nothing spectacular. We did have the aged madeira flight (some going back to 1968) which was fun to try.
All in all, it was a very flavorful and reasonably priced meal and we’d happily come back again.
