House of Prime Rib

We haven’t been here for a couple years so we were overdue to come try again. It’s such a San Francisco institution. I actually had a reservation because I had booked it almost a year ago (July 6 to be exact). Last time we were here, we just showed up at 4:30 to get on the waitlist and had no problem getting seated, but it’s a little bit nicer to have the security of a reservation. When we arrived, it just just a bit before our 5pm reservation and there were tons of people inside and outside. We checked in and stood around inside and after a few minutes they started calling people and we were soon seated.

We started off with some martinis – Ketel One vodka martini for Andrea and a Hendrick’s gin martini for me.

Andrea ordered the The City Cut and creamed spinach and baked potato for her sides and I went with the King Henry VIII Cut with creamed corn and mashed potato for my sides. I had to go for the King Henry VIII cut again because last time I didn’t know you could get a second piece when you finished your first piece, so I didn’t ask for it, so this was a redemption order.

We were given the bit of the show for the salad preparation as per usual. This cut of meat was not quite as pretty as the one I had last time. It was also well done on the outside as you can see and then close to the bone, there were bits that were almost rare, but I persevered through it all and finished it and did earn my second slice (and we were told no take home on second slice which was a bit surprising) so I asked for a small slice which I also consumed.

For dessert, we went with the pecan pie (a la mode of course) which was one of my childhood favorites. It was fortunately not cloyingly sweet like some preparations of pecan pie.

A hearty meal for sure, but a fun SF old school dining experience.
