Dinner at Cotogna before the Dear San Francisco show. This is the sister restaurant to Quince (at which we ate last month). We’ve only eaten here once before and very much enjoyed it and this time we were even more impressed.
Cocktails were delicious…I had the mezcal based Tremante, Andrea had the tequila based Aurora, and Paula and Kristina both had the NA Chrysanthemum cocktail. All were nicely balanced with flavors with it being overpowering.
For starters, Andrea had the summer tomato gazpacho, I had the SFormato, and we ordered the squash blossom pizza to share. The pizza was very good, again with several flavors, but none overpowering the other. My SFormato, a sort of rainbow carrot custard with a pea sauce was very rich and flavorful and such a delicate texture (not that this is relatively heavy for an appetizer).
For our pasta, Andrea had the raviolo di ricotta, I had the agnolotti del plin, Kristina had the garganelli (sans prosciutto), Ashe’s Paula had the tagliatelle with morels. The garganelli is a pasta tie I haven’t seen before. My agnolotti was so tender and a perfect ratio of pasta to filling. This was a relatively mild flavored dish and I tend to go for something with a bit more flavor. The tagliatelle was delicious (it’s hard to go wrong with a decent irritation of morels). The most amazing dish to be was Andrea’s raviolo. There was an egg yolk in the middle that you cut through to start to get that to mix with the browned butter to make the sauce. That with the pasta itself and the ricotta filling were divine.
We were running short on time before the show so we just had the two gelatos, one which was a vanilla honeycomb and the other was a mint straciatelli. The honeycomb was delicious and a bit sweet and the mint used obviously fresh mint which had that nice legacies quality to it.
Overall, we were very satisfied with our meal…the seasonal ingredients were so fresh and flavorful and each dish was meticulously prepared. I have to say, I actually enjoyed this meal more than our meal at Quince and I can’t wait to come back.
