La Cigale

Been meaning to eat here ever since they opened and when they were added to the Michelin guide and SF Chronicle lists, finally got organized for a visit. There are no reservations and seating is secured by showing up in person at the restaurant. Seating is given out at 4:30pm so recommendation was to show up at 4. This whole scheme is set up to focus on making the dining available for the locals, which was good for us since we lived relatively close. We decided to go on a Wednesday since we expected it wouldn’t be quite so busy. I got in line just a little after 4 and there were already 3 people in line ahead of me. As it would turn out, each of them had a part of 4, 3, and 4 respectively, so it was good that I lined up since there are only 15 seats per seating. After getting our seats secured, we were told to return about 5:50pm. We hung out at the coffee shop and the public library until then.

Restaurant seating is shaped like a rectangle with seating for 4, 7, and 4 per side all generally facing the open wood fired grill. Chef Joseph Magidow explained how everything is cooked on the wood fired grill and prepared personally by him including all of the butchery. He also explained that the cuisine was rustic western French.
