Prik Hom

low-key dinner this week at Prik Hom, a new-ish (opened in Feb) Thai restaurant on Geary in Laurel Heights. Menu has a few choices each for starters, soup, salad, curry, and stir fry. We went with all of our waiter’s recommendations (although we would have happily ordered anything on the menu) – branzino passion fruit salad, scallops and leomgrass, grilled beef wrap curry and spicy shrimp stir fry.

The branzino with the passion fruit sauce worked well together. The scallops and lemongrass “shot” is meant to be eaten in one bite with all of the ingredients mixed together (I admit to doing it in two bites). The shrimp was quite flavorful (the most flavorful bite of the meal IMO), esp. the shrimp heads which Andrea doesn’t eat so more for me! And also a strong favorite was the beef curry wrapped in various greens. All of the dishes were flavorful with the typical main flavors (i.e. salt, sweet, sour, bitter, spicy).

There were two options for dessert, a seasonal lychee popsicle and a smoked young coconut ice cream. The lychee popsicle also had some kefir lime and some toasted onion and peaches on the side. But the favorite dessert for sure was the the young coconut ice cream (sourced from Mitchell’s I believe) and smoked using a traditional Thai candle that’s aromatic almost like incense. The ice cream is served in a dish with a cover and the smokiness is revealed when you remove the lid.

Meal was quick and we were in an out in less 75 minutes or so. Food changes every 2-3 months, so we’ll have to come back again.

Andrea needs to get on board with the shrimp heads. I do love lychee and young coconut. I am trying to imagine passion fruit with branzino.
