We were interested in going to Wayfare Tavern’s new location. I think it’s been over 20 years since I’ve eaten here (although Andrea had been more recently), so I really didn’t recall the food. We both did like the atmosphere more at the old location, but things move on.
We both started with martinis, a vodka martini with olives for Andrea and a gin martini with a lemon twist. We both actually liked the gin, because it was more flavorful. The vodka martini was clean and crisp and light on vermouth, but should have ordered it dirty as we generally prefer.
We started with a dozen oysters which came as the chef’s selection of west coast and east coast oysters. We asked which ones they were and our server wasn’t sure, but told what she had written down in our notepad, but we had never heard of either one. I thought the oysters were ok, not the freshest we’ve had, but not bad. We did like the house-made hot sauce though that was made with Fresno peppers.
We also split a Green Goddess Salad which they were kind enough to plate separately. It had a prominent tarragon flavor and was refreshing.
For our mains, I had the California Fried Chicken and Andrea had the Truffled Wagyu Bavette. My fried chicken had a nice rosemary flavor to it. The breading was good. It wasn’t too thick and it wasn’t very crispy, but good nonetheless. The bavette had the strips of steak assembled into a roll. It was topped with a marmalade and fried shallots. The winner was the boredelaise sauce and of course the bone marrow which Andrea left all to me (yum). It also came with some frites which we didn’t notice when we ordered and fortunately we didn’t order a side of shoestring fries (we were tempted).
For dessert, we went with the olive cake (something we rarely see on menus. I think the last time we had olive oil cake was when we were at the olive oil mill Bastide du Laval) which we were warned that it came as more of a parfait which we had seen earlier at a neighboring table and since we wanted something a little bit on the lighter side, this worked out great. It definitely featured more of the pressed strawberries and the whipped cream than the olive oil cake.
Overall, it was a decent dinner for a lowkey
