Stubb’s Barb-B-Q

Mark and I had landed in Austin after lunch. After check-in to the hotel, we didn’t want to eat in the hotel and wanted to stretch our legs a bit so we walked around a bit to find someplace to eat. This was not very easy at 3pm in the afternoon. We walked along 6th st. which had a ton of bars and loud music, but most were closed and the open ones all seemed too empty and too loud for this old fart. I can see where this whole street would be super lively in the evenings with live entertainment though. We kept walking and saw on Google Maps that there was a food truck block, but those were all closed. We finally found Stubb’s BBQ and we definitely wanted to have BBQ while we were here in Austin and plus it was the only restaurant we could find that was open.

We were given HUGE glasses of water in those red plastic glasses. Mark was laughing because he tried using a straw which basically got lost in the glass. I’m sure these Texas-sized glasses of water are very handy when it’s really warm out, but it was still relatively mild here, but we were amused.

Mark ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich Plate with sides of Fried Okra and Sweet Potato Fries. I ordered the Angus Beef Brisket Sandwich Plate with sides of Cole Slaw and Hand-cut Fries. Mark and I ordered different meats so we could split sandwiches and try both since we were both interested in the pulled pork and the brisket. Both were very dry. I made pulled pork last month for our block party, but this was sad and bland. And as bad as the pulled pork was, the brisket was worse. The primary flavor was smoke which was nice and bit of pepper on the crust/bark, but it was very dry and leathery texture. I tried using some of the BBQ sauce, but that didn’t save it and I didn’t really like the flavor of the BBQ sauce (mostly tomato and vinegar).

I know we came at an odd hour (3pm or so), but this was terrible and not a great start to our dining here in Austin.
