This week, we wanted to try something a little different so we went to Movida, a lounge/restaurant not too far from the ballpark. The cuisine was a fusion of Mexican and Persian cuisine which was unique and sounded interesting. The lounge opened up last October and recently received a mention in the latest Michelin guide.
We started with some cocktails. Andrea’s cocktail that came in basically a bong along with a smoke filled bubble which was definitely a showstopper. Most of the dishes seemed primarily Mexican in origin with some Persian influence for interest. As an example, the chips included regular tortilla chips and fired lavash and we opted for the tahini queso (delicious, but wish there was more tahini) and the roasted eggplant dip which was a bit too sweet. The corn was good, the pomegranate adobo chicken taquitos were meh, and the jalapeno beef and lamb koobideh (basically a kofta) was ok.
We then had the Persian salad, which had fresh greens and green goddess dressing (Andrea makes a much more flavorful version), and the short rib birria tostada (I’m a sucker for birria so I enjoyed this although it was only good and not great).
For dessert, we had to try a couple different ones – we went with the arroz con leche which was served warm and had saffron and rose water for the Persian component served warm (it was a nice twist) and the baklava which was a mess to try to eat since the pastry just kept falling apart when trying to cut off a bite size piece, but the more savory components were a nice variation.
The vibe of the place was definitely lounge with some disco/pop/lounge music playing. It’d be a decent place to come for drinks and apps and only ok for a full restaurant experience. We’re glad we went just to try it out, but it’d be awhile before we revisited (not that anything was bad, but there are just so many other places to try here in the city). They also do brunch and their menu seems well suited for that
