Mister Jiu’s

I wanted to revisit Mr. Jiu’s since we hadn’t been here since pre-pandemic 2020. Restaurant didn’t seem very busy, but that’s not unusual on a Thursday evening (which is one reason we eat out on Thursdays), although later the bar would be packed.

We started with some cocktails which were….just ok. They kind of seemed like they were pre-prepared well drinks rather than hand crafted cocktails (on the plus side, they did come out very quickly).

We had the tasting menu with the addition of Peking duck and of course, wine pairing. The amuse bouche was interesting with caviar (Tsar Nicolau) with a vegetable forward presentation. Good, interesting, but not great. The first course was the razor clams and white asparagus. The asparagus prepped to look like a razor clam shell which was interesting, but the dish was quite bland with a very sparse presentation. The mackerel came next which was better and the combination of flavors with the sauce was good.

Dishes and wines seemed to get progressively better. There was a major fail with the roulade where they forgot to remove the saran wrap (and so they ended up comping our cocktails). The peking duck was very good and we really liked the peanut hoisin sauce.

All in all, it was a good meal, from memory, not as good as last time, and really not what I would have thought Michelin-star worthy.

Peking duck is (almost) always a good bet. I would eat Chinese food for the Peking duck (and a few other dishes—soups, mainly, and a few others).
