Reservations were a bit difficult since so many restaurants are closed since this is the time for vacation in France, but I did make this reservation for dinner. The chef, Jean-François Piège, was head chef in Top Chef France for ten years. The cuisine was modern which we really enjoyed. The menu is a tour of many regions in France and we went with the signature menu which promised various “surprises“. For wine pairings, I went with the Burgundy pairing and Andrea went with the special Burgundy pairing. They did have two special pairings that we passed on but were mildly tempted (not really at the price…) – a complete Domaine Romanee-Conti pairing for 1300 euro and a “legendary” pairing for 1500 euro that included Chateau Petrus which I keep telling Andrea that I want to have before I die.
Dinner was innovative and interesting, but I honestly didn’t think it was one of our best meals, but based on their uniqueness and innovation, Andrea gave them bonus points. The first “surprise” Andrea correctly guessed that it was monkfish liver (the staff told us the only ones who guess that correctly are Japanese which makes sense since the only time we get monk liver is when eating sushi.
Andrea’s favorite course was a dessert that was like a lava cake but no chocolate with a meringue and a vanilla crème anglais inside. My favorite was either the langoustine course with the caviar butter sauce (much better and less fishy than the caviar butter at William Frachot in Dijon) or the Brie cheese course that had Brie two ways – aged and a Brie mousse both of which were very savory.
All in all, it was an enjoyable and unique experience albeit a pricey one.
