Andrea had been wanting to go to Elena’s this week so we went on early Thursday evening expecting it would be easy to grab a bite here. However, when we arrived it was packed with quite a few people waiting inside and out. Andrea put her name on the wait list and we decided to camp out at the one seat available at the bar. We started with some cocktails, a spicy margarita for Andrea and I decided to try something different so went with the Mexican Mule. Andrea’s was decent. Mine was very watery.
For starters, Andrea wanted to try the Esquites and I had to get their House Made Guacamole. The corn was perfect for what Andrea likes – corn, some spice, lime, cotija.
We ordered our second round of drinks. Andrea went with the Spicy Cilantro Margarita and I want with the Espadin-arita which sounded interesting and because it was made it with mezcal. Sadly, I couldn’t taste any mezcal and asked the bartender about it. he went over to the other side of the bar to grab the bottle and gave us a tiny pour. That of course tasted like mezcal, albeit a mild one, but I still didn’t get any hint of that smokiness at all in the drink which was the whole point.
For our starter, we ordered the Combo Crudo which was both teh Ahi and Hamachi crudos. Unforunately, they were served in the same dish side by side so the two separate marinades for each just got all mixed together (although they weren’t very different). Tuna was off to me, but hamachi was fine.
For mains, Andrea ordered her usual and favorite, the pozole and I ordered the Fish Tacos based. Pozole was very nice. Fish tacos, very generic. Oh well. Andrea ordered well and enjoyed the meal which was the goal.
We pretty much knew we weren’t going to be able to finish these (plus we had pretty much polished off a bowl of the chips and salsa beforehand).
