Was looking for something that would be good, but not too fancy for this first night in Dallas. This Mexican place was listed int the Michelin guide so I figured it be pretty decent. They had a tasting menu so I figured that would be as great way to get a feel for what it was all about.
They also featured flights of tequila and mezcal so I started with the mezcal. First was an añejo which was quite nice, followed by an espadin that had a bit of fruitiness. The last was actually a sotol and not a mezcal which was not as rich and full flavored. Interesting that they presented them in this order.
First dish was a beet salad with some ajo blanco. Dressing was citrusy. I love beets, but overall it was just ok/good enough. Then came a couple little bites set atop masa crisps. One was tomato and the other was primarily corn and a salsa verde. I enjoyed these little bites which were sort of like canapés which tasted good, albeit a bit messy to eat. Then came beef cheek tacos. These were fantastic, by far and away the best dish of the evening. Rich, flavorful, meaty, tender and these were great with the tacos. The rest of the meal was not so memorable. Then came a palette cleanser, a creamy sorbet. I can’t remember what flavor it was, but thought it was interesting with a bit of heat. Then came the some grilled carrots and asparagus (meh) and a chicken dish on a bed of rice. The chicken was moist (which was good because I don’t really like chicken breast), but was just a bit bland. I see on their menu that they had a Guajillo Chicken with mole madre which would have been much more interesting. Lastly, dessert was a their chocolate pot du creme, made more mexican chocolate style.
If I ever went again, I would not do the tasting menu which seemed to mostly feature dishes not on the main menu, but I would definitely go à la carte instead which is what attracted me to the menu in the first place. Oh well.
