Elena’s

We had the cleaners scheduled at the house so we decided to take a late brunch here at Elena’s. We didn’t have a reservation, but based on our previous visits, we figured we’d be able to just walk in without much trouble. We were surprised to see that it was near full even at the bar, but we we only had to wait about 5 minutes which was good because we were starving (and I had gone on a run earlier in the morning so I was seriously dragging). We did make use of the time to review the menu and figure out what we wanted. So when we were seated, as soon as our waitperson came by to check in with us, we were ready to order.

To start, we ordered cocktails – the Elena’s Margarita for Andrea and the Bloody Madre for me. For starters, we ordered the House Made Guacamole and the Hamachi Tostadas. For our mains, Andrea ordered her favorite, Pozole, and I ordered the House Made Pork Tamale Benedict (I was looking for something with eggs) with the verde sauce which I’ve enjoyed here before.

The hamachi tostadas were nice, esp. with the bit of pickled onion as an acidic component. Since we were both so hungry, we had gorged ourselves on the chips, salsa, guac, and now these hamachi tostadas and at this point I wasn’t even hungry any more, not full, but no longer hungry and could have theoretically stopped eating, but of course that’s not the way we roll, lol

The pozole was good, but Andrea noted that it could have used more time to stew to better develop some of the flavors (and was great as leftovers the next day). My tamales were delicious with tasty pork, the corn flavor from the tamale, the eggs, the refried bean even (which I don’t normally like), and of course the fried eggs and verde sauce. Needless to say, I was seriously full (and we would not even eat dinner after this big late brunch).

I’ve said it before that this is definitely gringo Mexican food, but it is well done gringo Mexico food and we did quite enjoy it.
