Elena’s

It had been awhile since we had been here so I booked a reservation for Sunday noon. It was mostly full, but only one party waiting to get seated, so we probably could have walked in and there were plenty of seats at the bar. We were seated promptly after checking in and amusingly we were at the exact same table we were at last time.

To start, we needed margaritas. I went with an Elena’s Margarita with mezcal and Andrea went one of the spicy ones. We ordered some guac and some halibut ceviche. The ceviche came with some crackers and hot sauce, Chollula of course, but Andrea really liked the other one, Valentina (we’ll need to see where we can buy that next time we’re in the Mission). The ceviche was also served with crackers, so that’s the way we ate them. The crackers did actually work better than the chips which were very light. The deviche was bigger and more filling than we thought it was going to be, so we knew we were going to be taking home food today.

I had ordered the fish tacos with the fish prepared Baja style (other option was grilled) and Andrea had the pozole, which she always loves. The pozole was thick and hearty and one of the best pozoles we’ve had (not that we’ve had all that many really). The fish in my tacos had a nice thick breading with a very nice crunch. It was served with the hot sauce on the side which the waitperson said was because placing on the taco was sometimes too much for people. I can see why since it was pretty spicy.

We’ve only had dessert one other time we’ve been here, but since we saw the table next to us get the churros, we had to get some. They were fresh, a bit crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. it came with a warm chocolate sauce. Andrea did use that much, by I sure did

Churros for desert is always strange to me. Churros are breakfast (often post-night out–not that I do that now) where I am!
