We were just wandering back towards Pg. de Gràcia since we were curious about the White Rabbit Experience/Museum and were just looking for someplace to eat. We stumbled onto the Majestic Hotel and decided to check out their restaurant. It looked like they had a menú del día/prix fixe lunch that looked pretty good and we were there already so we went ahead and asked for a table. We were seated in an area with floor to ceiling glass with some foliage directly outside. There was only one other table seated.
Andrea ordered the Roasted aubergine to start and the Mushroom cannelloni for her main. Ginny and I both went with the sautéed mushroom with poached egg to start and the Grilled Duroc pork shoulder for our main.
First they gave us some bread from Sant Josep bakery and some “La Gramanosa” EVOO, both of which were quite good. They also gave us an amuse-bouche of lamb in a bun (practically a slider) and bit of roast pepper on top which was quite tasty.
I really enjoyed my mushroom starter…it had good a umami rich flavor of wild mushrooms and the poached eggs sealed the deal for me. When our pork dishes came, first bite was quite good, but as I cut into the meat for the second bite, it was still raw on the inside so I had to send it back (my sister’s pork, which was actually a larger piece, was fine and actually perfectly to temp with a bit of pink still). They did remedy it soon enough and all was good. The warm applesauce was a classic pairing with pork so it of course worked beautifully (of course, we never fail to bring up the Brady Bunch episode where Peter is saying “pork chops and apple sauce” in his version of Humphry Bogart accent…classic). Andrea’s mushroom dish had a strong flavor of raw button mushrooms which I didn’t find that exciting.
There were 3 desserts that all looked interesting so we just told them to give us one of each. These all turned out to be excellent. The cheesecake was surprisingly light and the addition of the fig was very good. The poached pear dessert was also very good thanks to the tasty granola (not overly buttery either) and esp. the almond ice cream. The pear itself had a good texture, not too mushy. lastly, the chocolate fondant was also executed well with the requisite gooey center and crunchy exterior. We were impressed with how quickly they were able to bring that with the other desserts, although the the fondant was pretty shallow in the baking dish which was smart to keep cook times short. Smart.
I also had an espresso which was also included as part of the meal. All in all, we came away very impressed with the quality of the meal and the venue for what was a very moderate price.
