Restaurant Daniel

This was one of the many restaurants on my list to try in NYC. We managed to score same day reservation late, which fortunately wasn’t very late for us since we’re still on pacific time zone. We’re not used to coming in on the second seating so there was a bit of a wait before we were seated. We had a choice of the 7-course tasting menu or the 4 course prix fixe. We weren’t particularly inspired by the tasting menu and both of us going prix fixe with different courses gave us the same number of different dishes to try and we got to pick each of our courses. There was a supplemental course with Perigord truffle but we’ve been burned so many times (including last night) that we were a little skeptical and wanted to inspect/smell the truffles which they accommodated; it didn’t have a lot of aromatics so we used on that.

So Andrea had the cauliflower velouté, the Hudson Valley seared foie gras, and the pork ribeye. I had the maybe lobster salad, sea bass, and venison. Wine pairings for both of us with different wines for the two of us for each course with our different choices. Service was a bit slow to start…it was about an hour from the time we arrived (include the wait before we were seated) to when we received our first course. Andrea’s velouté was tastier than my lobster salad. Her for foie gras presentation was one of the best we’ve ever had. My sea bass was ok. When it came to the meat course, my venison with the sumac dusting and beets 3 ways was better than Andrea’s pork. Her pork was sous vide, so perfectly cooked in inside, but could have used a bit more roast on the outside to care some of that Maillard goodness. For dessert, Andrea went with 4 cheeses and I went with the Piedmont noisette, a hazelnut and salted caramel dessert. Both were tasty. Wine pairings all around were solid. Overall, a very nice meal.

That bread wreath looks pretty, but I would fear it would be dry. Hazelnut and salted caramel…yum. Lol. Andrea and cheese.
