Thursday dinner we decided to low key in our ‘hood at Memento, a new (4 weeks or so) restaurant that we hadn’t yet tried. The restaurant had was darkly painted and the vibe was a bit more adult than most of the restaurants in our neighborhood (which is known for having a lot of kids so most locations are more kid friendly). Cocktails to start were ok/good and not overly boozy. I had the Green Dragon which was green tea based and Andrea had one that was supposed to be spicy and smokey. I wouldn’t say any of those flavors were very pronounced.
For starters, we had the shishito peppers and the also the friend empanadas. The shishito peppers came with a ponzu sauce which was a nice touch. For the empanadas, there was a choice of a machego and montery jack cheese or a beef one. Since we received three, we had 2 cheese and one beef. The empanadas were also good (they were deep fried so that was nice and not overly oily) although I wanted more filling compared to the amount of dough. Would have been better to have only had 2 empanadas, but more filling.
For mains, Andrea had the Crispy Curry chicken and I had the crispy skin salmon. The chicken dish was pretty decent. The use of chicken thighs is always a plus and having a mild curry made for a flavorful dish. My salmon dish wasn’t particularly good…first, the “crispy skin” wasn’t crispy at all and, two, the salmon was just bland to me. We’d get the chicken dish again, but would definitely not get the salmon again.
For dessert, Andrea had the Lime Mousse and I had the Flan. The lime mousse with the lime juice and zest had a nice acidity to it although Andrea wanted even more lime. I really liked my flan which was not overly firm and had a nice creamy texture and flavor.
The owners, Suhair and Raf (wife and husband) came over to talk to us and ask us how our meal was. Raf is the the one behind all of the recipes. We did give them feedback of the likes and some of the not so likes.
It was a decent mea, a solid addition to our neighborhood, and we’d certainly come back again.
