Mamahuhu

We were just looking for something low key for dinner. I’ve seen them advertise this double caviar fish sandwich on the sandwich board on the sidewalk when we’ve walked by the restaurant as we’re doing errands in the neighborhood. I haven’t eaten here in at least a couple/few years, although Andrea occasionally orders takeaway from here when I’m out of town.

The fish sandwich is not on the regular menu, but is shown on a placard for The Double Happiness Meal beside the normal menu and you get your choice of caviar. The caviars are a collaboration with Tsar Nicolai. The trout roe is lapsang souchong tea-smoked, but I don’t think they did anything special with the white sturgeon. I decided to go for the double caviar because YOLO. Andrea ordered the Lazi Chicken as a rice plate and the Crunchy Cabbage Salad.

The Double Happiness meal comes in a Happiness Meal carboard box. Inside was the two jars of caviar a Mamahuhu logo’d caviar spoon, and the sandwich. The sandwich was drenched in the Taiwanese tartar sauce and it was a complete mess to eat (although our homemade hamburgers are very much the same). The individual components were decent. The fried fish had a decent flavor to it. Can’t argue with Tsar Nicolai caviar and the tea smoked roe was good. The tartar sauce was vastly better than regular generic tartar sauce. In the end though, it was just ok as a complete dish (so much tartar sauce…) and more obviously a novelty.

Andrea’s chicken dish was actually quite good. Chicken was crisp from the rice batter, but not as spicy as you would expect except on the smaller pieces which had higher outside crisp to chicken ratio. The cabbage salad was decent thanks primarily to the creamy sesame dressing and also the candied cashews, scallions, cilantro celery (I didn’t really care for the crispy chow mein).

A nice bit of elevation from traditional Chinese food (I don’t have anything against Chinese food and have certainly enjoyed Four Kings, Dragon Beaux, HK Lounge Bistro, R&G Lounge, Yank Sing, etc., but I have also eaten a lot of mediocre Chinese food in my life) and a good inexpensive, tasty addition to our neighborhood.
