We were lazy and didn’t want to get groceries and cook so I started looking for someplace to eat out. So we ended up going to Firefly since it’s close and we’ve generally enjoyed the food when we’ve gone.
Andrea started with the Baby Lettuce Salad and I had the Grilled Daikon Radish which we always get when eat here. Daikon radish also came with some grilled mushrooms and scallion stir fry and also a shoyu-based sauce which gave a delicious umami flavor to it all. Andrea’s salad came with plums, pickled Nardello peppers (which is what really caught her eye), goat cheese, savory granola and a white balsamic vinaigrette. Salad was fresh and nicely balanced with all of the components.
For our mains, Andrea ordered the Fried Heritage Chicken which is arguably their signature dish and one we always get here and I ordered the Provençal Lamb Stew. The stew came with lentils, kale, carrots, potatoes, mushrooms, basil pesto to top. There were also bits of a nicely fried and crisped parmesan polenta. It wasn’t a thick stew like you would think, but a semi-deconstructed stew with all of the elements and a rich sauce at the bottom. The lamb was tender as expected and it was a nice, hearty dish. The fried chicken was tasty also as expected. It had a nice crisp batter and the chicken was moist. There was a side of a serrano dipping sauce which helped give some flavor – Andrea found it quite hot although I though it quite moderate. Her dish also came with mashed potatoes, slaw, and a buttermilk biscuit (she also had a choice for cornbread) with butter and honey. She couldn’t finish the dish even with my help so we did have the drumstick to take home.
Even so, we decided to go for dessert, because that’s the way we roll. What looked good to both of us was the Sticky Banana Cake (I love bananas). What also sounded interesting about this dessert is that it came with a coconut-ginger ice cream and a rum butterscotch sauce. It was all topped with a sort of crumble that resembled the stuff inside of a butterfinger (the menu mentioned cashews so perhaps it was made of that instead of peanut butter). I actually liked the banana cake itself and I do really like butterscotch, but in this case the sauce just overpowered the flavor of the banana cake which was quite moist and nicely banana flavored. I also liked the spicy kick of the ginger in the ice cream.
All in all, a quick and easy ad hoc dinner out that worked great for our lazy asses.
