We were looking for a low key option for dinner without any advanced planning. It’s funny that because this restaurant is so close we often don’t think of it as our first option to eat at. We figure in the 20+ years we’ve lived in our house, we’ve probably walked by this restaurant a couple thousand times, but we’ve only eaten here a handful of times. Also, they’ve had a parklet ever since the pandemic and they recently rebuilt and upgraded it. Andrea has always said she wanted to eat in the parklet ever since they first had it and so this was going to finally be that time (4 years later…). Plus it’s been really hot this past week and sitting outside seemed like a nice option.
There are a few staples they have on the menu which we’ve mostly had, so we generally avoided those in the interest of trying something new with the major exception being the fried chicken which we almost always have felt compelled to get (plus we don’t often eat fried chicken).
For starters, Andrea ordered the tomato salad which also had some calabrian chile citronette which I knew she would go for. I went with the chicken liver which I hadn’t ever seen on the menu before and just to try something different. For our mains, Andrea had the fried chicken with the biscuit and I went with the beef brisket also something I’ve not previously seen on the menu.
Overall, the food was fine…not anything particularly special…the mains were slightly elevated version of comfort food (although I am more than happy just to have flavorful not elevated comfort food).
We did dine relatively early (5:45 reservation) and service was fine outdoors, but we’re always a bit wary wondering how well service would be outside when things get busy indoors. As it would turn out, things did slow down quite a bit with quite a bit of delay to place our order for dessert, sticky banana cake with butterscotch sauce, followed by quite a bit of a wait for the dessert to arrive which only occurred after we flagged down one of the wait staff and asked about it and told them if it wasn’t ready just to cancel it. They did very shortly thereafter bring it out. To their credit, they ended up comp-ing dessert. After all that, dessert was pretty meh.
So it was nice to sit outside and have a very convenient and chillaxing dinner so close to home even if the food itself was only merely good and not anything particularly special (and yes, I’m a snob).
