I had booked this reservation 3 months ago and because this restaurant was so popular, this was the soonest I was able to book for a weekend brunch. Of course, we had since come here as walk-ins, once for lunch during the work week and once for dinner. Since we had the reservation, we decided to go anyway and see what brunch was like.
The restaurant was mostly full and there was no one waiting to get a table. We ordered some cocktails…Andrea had a spicy watermelon margarita and I had the bloody madre, their Bloody Mary made with mezcal. I like that they “salt” the rims with tajin. Both were very good’s with my preference being the bloody madre.
The menu was a brunch menu and did have some different items than just the regular lunch menu. We ordered the esquites (Mexican street corn with aioli, hot sauce, cotija, cilantro) to start. This was pretty good without the effort of having to eat it off the cob.
For our entrees, I had the pork tamale benedict with green sauce as Andrea had the chopped salad with skirt steak carne asada. I really enjoyed my dish. The pork tamale filling was well seasoned, the dough was a bit too thick and chunky in places, the verde sauce brightened things up a bit, and the egg gave a bit of richness to it all. I even liked the refried beans which I normally never care for, but these were flavorful thanks to a generous amount of lard and salt.
Andrea’s chopped salad was fine as far as chopped salads go and I do have to say the skirt steak carne asada was very good…decent quality meat and well seasoned.
Another big mid-day meal, so I’ll need a siesta this afternoon and just a small dinner.
