Damansara

Last night’s dinner was another low key dinner in our neighborhood, this time at Damansara a Malaysian restaurant that opened up last October. We arrived at about 6:30 or so, but it was not very busy with maybe 2 tables seated. We started with some cocktails which were just ok.

We ordered a bunch of dishes from the menu. For starts, the grilled otak-otak (fish meat with herbs and spices wrapped in a banana leaf which was meh), the taro cake with shiitake, vegetables, fermented black beans, chef’s sauce which was delicious and our favorite dish of the evening), and the curry puff (pastry filled with potato, egg, curry – ok with a tasty sauce). We also ordered the Damansara Laksa Noodle Soup which was one of their signature dishes (ok, but wish there was much less noodle and more broth) and the beef rendang rice plate (very bland considering there was supposed to be 24 spices) as well as two sides – Achar pickles and crispy anchovies and peanuts.

Service was attentive enough, but pacing for dishes was a bit quick with almost all of the dishes except for the beef dish coming out in quick succession/almost all at once.

We did also have the Manisan Sweets Flight for dessert which included a casava cake, ube, and the other two I’m not sure of (one I though our server said was sesame, but didn’t taste like it and the green one was very bland).

All in all, it was an ok meal with bonus points for some of the flavors, seasoning/spices. It’s nice to have something like this in our neighborhood, but based on the number of diners, I don’t know how long they will survive.

I can get on board with this meal. Ube–the purple food. I loved shocking my friends with ube ice cream as a kid “What flavor is THAT?”
