We’re here in Vegas to celebrate my Mom’s b-day. I was trying to find something that would be acceptable to all of us and something interesting. I was interested to try a Jose Andres restaurant since we actually haven’t eaten at one of his restaurants, but I actually didn’t have very high expectataions because it was a steakhouse. But this really exceeded my expectations.
They were certainly quite serious about the beef…for their signature steaks which were 2-3 lbs. bone in, they cooked them in the Spanish style with placing the meat on the upper rack for 40 minutes to come up to temperature and then on the lower rack for 20 minutes to brown and finish the meat.
We did start with cocktails…all of which were very very good. my mom had a mojito, Trisha had a salted air margarita, I had a mezcal negroni, and Andrea had a tequila and cedar cocktail. This really doesn’t convey any of the spectacle of the creation and presentation of these cocktails and each was very delicious in their own way.
We started with various small plates and appetizers including a mega chicharron, albondigas, croquetas, ora king salmon in ponzu, jose’s taco (nori taco with jamon, caviar, gold leaf). Each dish was an very well executed and flavorful rendition of each dish, elevating some basic dishes to some of the best versions of each that we’d ever tasted.
For our main course, we of course had steak…we went with a the wagyu and an “vaca vieja” older humanely raised cow to contrasts. the wagyu was a better tasting and more tender and the beef from the older cow was a bit tougher. This was an excessive amount of meat for us at this point (more leftovers for me for lunch!). In addition, we also had an octopus dish which was well prepared and tender, well seasoned, and a great sauce.
For sides, we went with some carrots and some brussel sprounts…again, not just the typical preparation that you would expect, but very interesting and tasteful versions of each of these.
We weren’t really hungry for dessert, but we weren’t going to pass it up. We went with the 8-piece chef’s choice dessert as well as 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream, as recommended by our waiter. The 8 pieces of dessert were ewell prepared and one of our favorites was the mini pecan pie cookie. The vanilla ice cream was so incredibly smooth that it was almost like a more solidified creme anglais.
I really couldn’t convey how many delicious tastes we had during this meal, but it was a great way to enjoy our time together over some fantastic food and drinks.
