Alexander’s Steakhouse

This week, we decided to eat at Alexander Steakhouse. This had not been on our radar at all since we have habitually been disapointed with steak when eating out except for two notable exceptions (Niku here in SF and Bazaar Meat by Jose Andres in Las Vegas. But since our fellow foodie, Trish, mentioned during truffle-palooze recently, we decided to give it a try.

The restaurant is located in SOMA and it wasn’t too crowded on this Thursday evening (this is one of the primary reasons why we like eating out on Thursday rather than Fri/Sat). We started with cocktails – Andrea had The Mission, a tequila based drink and i had the Oaxacan Smoke which we both though was the winner although we both wished it had been more mezcal forward.

The cuisine is steakhouse with a Japanese influence. Siince this was our first time here, we went with the tasting menu and wine pairing as we are wont to do with additions of the citrus salad and the Hokkaido milk bread. My favorite course was the scallop course with the wagyu XO sauce. Both our steaks (Andrea went with the standard filet mignon and I upgraded to an A5 wagyu) were right on temp which is not always the case, so much so that I wondered if the steak was sous vide. We asked our waiter and he said that they go through two (not sous vide) phases to cook. Andrea’s filet a strong flavorful sauce and mine was unadorned. I prefered the more subtle and unctuous flavor of the wagyu. Wine pairings were interesting and different (e.g. a white Listan from the Canary Islands for the wagyu tataki).

All in all, it was a solid experience (i said B+) and I certainly wouldn’t mind coming back here again.

What is that black butter with the milk bread? Also… ring-o’-salad.
