Wako

I’ve been wanting to come back here…we last ate here pre-pandemic, although we did do take out during that time and as good as that was, it’s not nearly the same. Last time we ate here, we weren’t seated at the counter, but this time I made sure we were and that makes a big difference. Even better, we were seated at one side of the corner which was great because the most experienced sushi chef was serving there. Accordingly , he didn’t use pre-sliced fish and he in fact did all the slicing for the other two chefs. If you’re not seated at the corner of the counter or sitting at one of the tables, everything is pre-sliced. We were definitely some of the oldest people in the restaurant ages more dressed than most…guess we are officially old school.

There was a tasty starter with firefly squid. We had the appetizer sampler which had (right to left in the photo) snapper roe, sesame tofu, ankimo (fantastic), fried blue fin tuna, tamago, and a tomato and miso cream cheese. We then had the chawanmushi which had Hokkaido horse hair crab…fantastic. Then we had the sushi omakase…Fantastic ingredients, combination, and preparation and presentation; I wish we lived in the neighborhood and could just eat here every week. I added on a few extras – abalone, anago, and saba.

Service was just a tad rushed (the whole experience only took 90 minutes), but I really can’t complain. Two thumbs (and two Michelin stars) up and definitely one of my favorite sushi restaurants (The Shota would be my other top pick. Shane we didn’t get to try Masa while we were in NYC, but then again, I don’t think I would pay that much for their omakase).

I mean, hard to go wrong with high-end sushi.
