In the 30+ years Andrea has lived here and the 25+ years I have, neither of us had ever eaten here, so it was certainly long overdue. As expected, it was old-school/classic from the decor, the cocktails, the menu, which we were in the mood to try.
Andrea started with the Caesar salad and I had the veal sweetbreads since we’re never going to make that at home. Caesar was basically what you expected. Sweetbreads were fine, not gamey, but not particularly flavorful either. For our mains, Andrea had the Steak Diane and I had to try the 20oz aged rib eye with the truffle madeira sauce. Sauces for both were variants on brown sauce. Steaks were undersalted for our taste. Andrea’s was cooked just a touch more rare than medium rare (which is my preference) and mine was a touch closer to medium from medium rare which is the way Andrea prefers it. Too bad. Overall, i have to say that my streak of disappointment in steaks at a restaurant continued and I would easily prefer the steaks we make at home on the BGE, but I had to try it (although I’ll probably never order steak at a restaurant ever again since I’ve learned my lesson).
We couldn’t finish our steaks, but we had to try dessert anyway. There was a mango coconut baked alaska on the menu and I asked if they flambee’d it table side, but they didn’t (boo hoo). So instead we went with the strawberry and raspberry pavlova and the orange creme brulee. Both were as you would expect. Wines were ok – the cab from the diamond creek area that Andrea had was good as well as her tokaji. All in all, a different outing from our usual fine dining. Food was basically what you’d expect from a classic steakhouse. For what it was, we enjoyed the overall experience (our server was awesome too), but we wouldn’t come here just for the food.
