Short version: Food is basically hotel food, but the venue is great.
Long version: Reservation was for the chefs 3-course tasting menu which reserved seating outside on the lanai. I scheduled the reservation for 5:15 which gave us time to make sure we would take in the sunset at 5:45. We don’t get to eat outside often in SF and this sunset was amazing even for a jaded old fart like me.
Food here was very basic. The chefs menu is 3 courses base price with upgrades. Andrea had the kanpachi and the catch of the day and a side of Maui onion rings. I had the ahi tartare and the scallops and pork belly. The bread was basic hotel rolls. They also started us with an amuse primarily consisting of orzo (very standard hotel banquet fare and not very amusing or delightful for the palate) although the pepper added just a hint of interest. Both of our starters were very basic. Entrees were ok. Andrea’s fish was ok. My scallops were very gritty although at least the pork belly had flavor (although basic). The onion rings could have been from TGI Fridays/outback/Applebee’s (this is but a compliment).
The entertainment was nice to have (we basically had a front row seat) although I knew he had to cater to the hotel dinner crowd (90+% white. I did see one other Asian and a black guy)…I did bet Andrea that the performer, on ukulele, would play Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World. She didn’t take me up on that bet and he did play that for his second song. Wines were so so and fortunately the waiter warned us that the wine pairings were only 2 oz pours so we ordered a la carte. Dessert was adequate. Overall, food is mediocre hotel food but the venue was quite nice.
