2.5 hour tour and tasting at Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, one of the famed first growth chateaus (also, this “chateau” has no castle, which was potentially one of the reasons it was not originally classified as a first growth under the 1855 classification, but only much later in 1973). Tour/tasting fee is on the pricey side, 65 euro each, but the wine itself is obviously expensive and the tour was very informative (thanks to a very knowledgeable guide) on the interesting history of the estate (e.g. the family history, the name Mouton, etc.), as well as the wine making process (e.g. manually doing clarification by candlelight, also the use of egg whites (5 or 6 per barrel)). The museums were interesting (no pictures allowed) esp. the one with all the artwork for the labels. We learned a bit about the artwork on our bottle of 2001 (should be ready to drink in a few more years…)… It was to commemorate 9/11 as indicated by the twin images (reminiscent of the twin towers), the cross (the t) and the candle (the I) in the lettering. Pours were generous by typical tasting standards, but you are paying for it if course. Bonus: no one was wearing t-shirts or flip flops in our group although we did see another group that had a guy in sweat pants.
